German professor wins Thai top medical award

BANGKOK, Nov.

27 (Xinhua) -- A German medical professor who discovered a new treatment for breast cancer was named winner in the field of medicine of 2007 Prince Mahidol Award of Thailand, while an Australian scientist and a Nepalese eye surgeon were both nominated as winners in the field of public health.

"Their outstanding work had improved medical treatment for many people around the world," Vicharn Panich, chairman of the Award Committee of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, was quoted by Thai news network The Nation as saying on Tuesday.

Professor Axel Ulrich from Germany, Professor Basil Stuart Hetzel from Australia and Sanduk Ruit from Nepal were chosen from 69 outstanding medical practitioners and researchers nominated from 35 countries.

The selection is held annually by the Prince Mahidol Foundation chaired by Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The awards, including cash prizes of 1.5 million baht (about 44,118 U.S.

dollars) each, will be bestowed on the three doctors by the King of Thailand at a ceremony at the Grand Palace on Jan.
